Annual Beef & Beer Celebration

Not even a little rain could scare away friends and neighbors on Friday, Sept. 26th for the LHIA Annual Beef & Beer Celebration.  The evening was damp but filled with fun for all.  Adults and kids alike enjoyed delicious hamburgers and hot dogs along with many treats made by everyone attending the event.

While adults mingled and caught up with the latest news around town, the kids enjoyed a very special treat.  The space walk was a blast and kept the kids busy for most of the evening.  All in all it was an evening of food, fun and laughter.  Pictures can be viewed on the LHIA website by clicking here.           7-year-old boy aims to bring a smile to the homeless

Lakewood Heights boy makes it his mission to help the homeless one person at a time.  Cody Hosch got off the bus one day with an idea to make Fleur de Lis ornaments & pictures to sell to friends and family.  With the money going to make back-packs; he decided to fill the bags with food, gloves, hats, socks, toiletries, a blanket and more.  With the $518 he raised in orders and donations Cody was able to make 45 backpacks and thanks to two local stores an additional 33 bags to offer  the homeless at Ozanam Inn in New Orleans.  He and friends have formed “Cody Cares” and will sponsor special projects throughout the year.  They are currently collecting women’s, men’s & kids clothing and linens.  In addition they are raising money ($700) to become an official nonprofit organization so that all future donations are tax deductible.Become a friend of “Cody Cares” on facebook or email codycares2010@gmail.com     To make a clothing donation, drop the items at 370 Laura Drive North or call 985-626-5510.   To watch the video, click here

Lakewood Heights Residents Band Together For Important Cause

Mary Payton Vigil has been in school with 2 of our children over the past 3 years.  She is a beautiful 5 year old child who was diagnosed in January 2008 with a very rare, at Mary Payton Vigil this time fatal, neurological disorder called
Late Infantile Neuronal Ceroid Lipofuscinosis (LINCL), sometimes referred to as Batten Disease. Clinical trials have begun and have had tremendous progress but they are unable to continue due to funding.  A group of Mandeville residents started Mary Payton’s Miracle Foundation in honor of Mary Payton Vigil and are determined to help fund treatment and research for the children affected by LINCL. Friends and family are determined to help save this baby’s life.  Please visit the website that has been created to read more about Mary Payton, LINCL and to make an online donation. A benefit  is being hosted on October 3, 2008 at Benedicts restaurant and sponsors, live and silent auction donations and volunteers are being sought out to help work the event.   If you are interested please email Michelle Boudreaux at michelle@marypaytonsmiracle.com or call me 504-382-2621.  If you are not able to help at this time, please read her story anyway and remember how fortunate we all are to wake up with our healthy children everyday!  There is nothing more important!

Lakewood Heights Participates in National Night Out

Tuesday, August 5th was National Night Out Against Crime (NNO) and over 30 Lakewood Heights Adults and Chiildren participated in the event by walking the 'loop' of our subdivision along with Mandeville Police Officer Ottillio. Organized by the LHIA Board, this event included the distribution of glow sticks for the children, freezer pops and cold bottled water. "This event alows neighbors to meet each other and the more of our neighbors we know the better we can work together as a neighborhood to fight crime", stated LHIA President Ken Winn.

Jamie Hamel, an LHIA Director whom helped secure Officer Ottillio for the event, stated that "We are hoping to build upon this for next year. It was fun walking the neighborhood and stopping along the way to meet neighbors". The LHIA Board thanks everyone whom participated in the event and hopes to increase the turnout in 2009.

Lakewood Heights Spring Party

The Lakewood Heights Annual Spring Fling was held on Sunday, April 5th from 3pm – 5pm. With the local park as our backdrop and great weather, there was lots of FUN for everyone. The afternoon started with coloring, cookie decorating, face painting and tattoo’s for the kids. We definitely have some up and coming artists in the neighborhood. And the cookies were as fun to decorate as they were to eat.

Next on the agenda was an egg hunt. The park grounds were layered in colorful eggs just waiting to be discovered. Over forty kids of all ages searched for as many eggs as they could find. Each age group received cool prizes which were awarded to the girl and boy who found the most eggs, the person finding the least eggs and the lucky kids who found the extra special gold/silver eggs. After collecting all the goodies inside the eggs, we took part in a little healthy competition. The “Bunny Hop”, also known as the sack race, brought everyone to their feet hopping about the green grass. We rounded out the day with an old fashioned Egg Toss. Young and old alike enjoyed this suspense filled activity with no major casualties.

When it was all said and done each child was a winner that afternoon and received a gift. From jump ropes, chalk, batons, kites, silly string, planes and bats with balls there was something for everyone. It was a super day watching the kids laugh, run and play while the adults enjoyed catching up with friends and neighbors. After all, isn’t that what it’s about? Enjoying time with our children and celebrating a community we love and call home. Thanks to everyone for making the Lakewood Heights 2009 Spring Fling a huge success. We look forward to seeing you all there next year in 2010. For a full set of images, visit the Photo Gallery.
